| JUMPJET SPECTACLE SHOW AT THE EX
THE PROJECT:
In 2008 Circus Orange was asked to create a custom pyro spectacle performance to be staged nightly at the Canadian National Exhibition (The EX) in Toronto. We had been involved in both live performances and fireworks at the EX before, but this year they were looking for a unique hybrid that would mesmerize their audience and keep them on site a little longer each night.
The show that we developed was a combination of high-flying circus aerial arts, theatrical story line, pyrotechnics and flame effects all set to an industrial backdrop. We called it JumpJet, as it revolved around our custom built vertical take off pyro fueled jet plane. After a dramatic intro sequence by our four-dancer/air traffic controllers staged on top of industrial sea containers, the jet stole the show as it flew up into the night sky. We created the illusion of propulsion through innovative special effects including liquid flame generators, pyrotechnics, CO2 jets and smoke. This, combined with live Foley sound effects, made for a truly awesome interactive experience. The audience could feel the heat as the jet flew upwards suspended by an industrial crane.
Most of the show took place on, around and under the jet itself with everything from a graceful trapeze act, a nail biting engine fire scene and finally a dynamic bungee act. We included an innovative duo trampoline/flamethrower act and staged it all with a backdrop of high-elevation pyrotechnics. All in all this 25-minute show was a true roller coaster ride for the Exhibition audience, and something not to be forgotten.
PROJECT RECAP:
This was a great show for Circus Orange as it incorporated our live performance skills, special effects wizardry, and the ability to tell a story on a grand scale in an outdoor setting. The final product was both original and wildly entertaining, and we received rave reviews.
An interesting aspect to this production was the fact that the Discovery Channel made a one-hour long documentary chronicling the development of the show, both behind the scenes and on stage. This show still airs, and is called Firejammers. This televised aspect to the show proved to be a great promotional tool and a way to show our audiences just what it takes to produce a show such as this.
