OTTAWA CONVENTION CENTRE - GRAND OPENING - APRIL 13, 2011
We just returned home from the grand opening of the brand new Ottawa Convention Centre. This was a very exciting project for our team as it enabled us to create a number of diverse elements within the context of this gala opening night event. One of the main features of this stunning new building is the one of a kind glass facade that faces onto the Rideau Canal with the Parlement buildings in the distance . Our mandate was to create a finale show that really showed off this glass. The audience was situated inside the building looking out and we had the glass and the Ottawa skyline as our canvas.
Our show started with a brand new act that we created just for this event entitled The Window Washer. This was an act created by our very talented in house stunt clown, Jonah Logan. The show started as our window washer character made his way down the glass facade on a series of ropes with his humourous window washer cart. He then performed numerous physical gags outside on the vertical glass surface and interacted with his audience inside the building. He was able to communicate by writing words in spray foam washing fluid and was a perfect gentleman tipping his hat to the ladies. At times it appeared like he was going to fall off his cart as he dangled from the rig by one arm but is was all part of the hilarious choreography in this truly unique warm up act.
The window washer act flowed seamlessly into the 5-minute long high-elevation pyrotechnic main event. The start of this set was signified by pulsing pyro strobes from all along the Rideau Canal. Soon 300' high comets, mines and crossettes were shooting skyward in perfect sync to the music playing to the audience inside the building. We really wanted to have a human performance element right through our entire show so we added in our human powered pyro wheel right in close to the glass with our aerialist inside. This was suspended by an industrial crane but the appearance to the audience was that of a floating orb of pyro with our aerialist at the epicentre. As she performed in the wheel effects fired outwards creating one of our signature effects. This combined with the high elevation pyrotechnics from below made for a truly stunning close to the night's festivities.
We would like to offer a special thank you to the Ottawa Convention Centre for trusting us with their big opening and to everyone at Accucom Inc. for producing the show and running it so smoothly.
The Window Washer Act is now available for next event with big windows that require a comical cleaning! Contact us for more details today.
